Describing Personality and Character Traits

When we are describing someone’s personality or character, we are answering the question: “What’s he/she like?”.  We can use positive or negative adjectives to answer this question.
*Note: Character is different than personality. A character is usually more objective and can be  socially judged as right or wrong.  It is built based on beliefs and values.
A personality is usually more subjective (can’t really be right or wrong). Our personality includes our traits and it makes us who we are.

Questions to ask are:
- What’s he/she like?, What are they like?, What are you like?
- What’s his/her personality/character like?
WRONG ANSWERS:    They’re like (nice, funny, mean, etc...).
We don’t need to repeat "like": She doesn’t like swimming
The question does not ask what the person ‘likes’.

RIGHT ANSWERS:
To describe someone’s personality/character: He/She is shy, They are funny, My best friend is a serious person, My father is an outgoing person, My teacher is friendly, He is kind and generous.
We use: Subject+to be+adjective

These are some adjectives to describe personality – it’s not right or wrong: Shy, outgoing, funny, silly, annoying, excitable, dynamic, passive, clumsy, energetic, imaginative, patient /impatient, aggressive, spontaneous, romantic, practical, etc.
These are some adjectives to describe someone’s character – can be judged as good or bad.
honest/dishonest, trustworthy/untrustworthy, brave, courageous, responsible/irresponsible, dependable, cowardly,  fair, ethical, just, loyal, devoted, humble, etc.
